LAUREL MOUNTIAIN MINE INSTALL PED FOR PRODUCTIVITY & SAFETY
MINE: LAUREL MOUNTAIN
OWNER: CLINCHFIELD COAL CO.
TYPE: COAL
LOCATION: VIRGINIA, USA
BACKGROUND
Laurel Mountain identified improved communications could offer productivity increases. As the mine did not have a means to quickly contact personnel at all places underground, PED was seen as the optimum solution.
COMPOSITION
The transmitter system consists of one transmitter powering a 9km (6 mile) underground loop antenna. 22 BeltPED Personal Receivers
DESCRIPTION
The underground antenna is installed in the main track and beltway. The signal radiates off the loop antenna into the main section and also back outside the mine to the main surface office, to achieve mine wide coverage. The transmitter is installed underground and connected via twisted pair to the PC located in the mine office. The BeltPEDs are primarily used by maintenance personnel and supervisors.
JUSTIFICATION
Though a small mine, Laurel Mtn justified the cost of the system on the need to contact their supervisors and maintenance personnel more efficiently.
